Happy New Year
I’m glad everyone had a terrific winter break. The students came back to school last week rested and ready to learn.
January Testing dates
On Tuesday, January 17 and Monday, January 23 we will take the MAP test first thing in the morning. Next week the students will complete their second round of DIBELs testing on Thursday, January 19. Once again you can help at home by making sure your child is at school on time and well rested before the tests.
Math Workshop
I’ve been planning to move to a math workshop model since November. At the most basic level, math workshop involves a mini-lesson, independent practice, and a share time. The independent practice includes students working on iPads completing both Dreambox lessons and fact fluency practice on either Big Brainz or Pet Bingo, daily word problem application, and playing games to reinforce the concepts I am covering. During this time, I can work with small groups in order to better meet the needs of each student. The only change that you may see is that we might not be finishing the problem set each day. The students are very enthusiastic about these rotations so far. I’ll be using several data points to gauge the success of the workshop model. Please let me know if you have any questions about this change.
Winter Sports Forms
Thank you for helping your child choose a sport that is a learning opportunity for them. The Winter Sports program is designed to allow your child to try a sport they wouldn’t regularly participate in outside of school. I’m more than happy to give up 2.5 instructional days for this great outdoor learning opportunity when students are learning something new. I really appreciate you backing me up on this!
Lip Stuff and Indoors Shoes Please!
There have been a lot of chapped lips in class this week. Feel free to send “lip stuff” of your choice with your child for them to keep in their desks. Please label with their name. Also, be sure to send your child with a pair of indoor shoes. If they wear their snow boots in the room we end up with wet bums after we sit on the carpet. Thanks!

Spelling - I’ve started spelling groups in class this week. I’m teaching two different groups based upon the students’ individual needs in spelling. Both groups took spelling tests today and most seemed to do very well. I’m planning on keeping all instruction during school hours so as to not add onto our homework routine. However, if you are interested in the words that your child is working on currently, you can download the Spelling City app or login online to Spellingcity.com. Your student can show you how to access our class lists. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Social Studies- This week we discussed how the interviews went and shared out some the most interesting things that they learned from this assignment. Next week students will start writing up their interviews in the form of a “Then and Now” book. Thanks for helping get their interviews completed so they could do this assignment.
Family History project
The highlight of the Family History project has always been our Family Festival. We’ve scheduled the Family Festival for Wednesday, December 21; from 2:20 to 2:50 pm. Please try your best to make it to this fun and delicious open house. This will be a time to eat, socialize, admire your child’s work, and celebrate the learning we have done as part of this unit. We ask that each family bring a plate of a favorite family dish to share. Some examples I gave from my family were Mom’s Christmas cookie, Great-Grandma’s Mac-n-Cheese, or Orange Nonnie (You’ll have to attend to find out what this is☺). Please plan to have your family’s dish here by 2:10 on that Thursday.
Seesaw - In the past week students have begun uploading their own documents and videos to Seesaw. This is the next step in the students creating their own portfolios. I’ve seen a real uptick in time and interest spent on their fluency practice as well. I hope you’re enjoying their posts as well.
Book Order
Your child is bringing home a book order today. Orders are due by noon next Friday, December 9. This will guarantee delivery before break. If you’d like to purchase books to give as gifts be sure to shoot me an email and I will wrap up the books before I send them home with your child or will hold onto them for you to pick up. I’m always willing to help out getting books under the tree.
Are you leaving early for Winter Break or coming back late…
Please let me know if you’ll be missing any school days on either side of our vacation.

Indoors Shoes Please!
As the snow starts to fly again please be sure to send your child with a pair of indoor shoes. If they wear their snow boots in the room we end up with wet bums after we sit on the carpet. Feel free to send a pair of shoes that your child can keep in their cubby all winter. Thanks!
Curriculum Update
READING – We are continuing our study of non-fiction books. Last week we practiced using both non-fiction text features and the actual text to learn new information.
WRITING – This past week the students worked with me to write our first science lab report. We asked a question, each child wrote their own hypothesis, crafted step-by-step directions, and finally ran our experiments. Next week we will analyze our results and write our conclusions.
MATH –We are continuing our work with place value this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES-Family History project
Interview questions went home last week with directions. The interviews are due back on Tuesday, November 29. Please contact me if you’re child did not get their questions home or if you have any questions.
I would love to schedule a few family members to come in and talk with the kids about their experience as a child/growing up. Speakers would be asked to sit in front of the class and be prepared to talk about where they grew up, if it was suburban/urban/rural, where they moved to throughout their childhood and why, and any traditions (holidays, milestones, birthdays) that their family still does today. The kids will also be prepared to ask some questions about what transportation, clothing, toys, technology, and tools were like during their childhood. The session usually takes 30-45 minutes. I would like to schedule speakers to come in between November 25 – December 20. Please contact me if you have any volunteers!
Parent Teacher Conferences
I want to take a moment and thank everyone for attending conferences. I felt that they were very productive and a great opportunity to celebrate your child’s success.
Missing Bogs
If you have a pair of black Bogs at home could you please check the backs of them to make sure that they don’t have the letter “K” written on the thermometer near the heal. If you happen to have them, please have your child bring them back to school.

Costume Party
The students earned another prize from the Mystery box last week. They pulled out Wear a Costume. Perfect timing in my opinion! We will have our costume party tomorrow, October 27 from 2:05 to 3:00. Just like the carnival later tomorrow evening, please do not send any weapons with costumes.
Carnival
I hope to see you all at the carnival tomorrow night. If you can please send in a plate of chocolate chip cookies (no nuts) for the dinner.
Book Orders
Please submit you book orders online or to me with a check by the end of the day tomorrow.
Tennis
Wraps up next Wednesday
Conferences
I sent an email to all families regarding conference date and time yesterday. Thanks to everyone who has already confirmed. Please contact me if you did not receive my email.

Picture day will be Wednesday, October 5. Envelopes went home today in your child’s homework folder last week. Let me know if you need another one.
Reader’s Workshop -
We are preparing us for next week’s launch of our Reader’s Workshop. Starting Monday I will begin meeting with reading groups while the other students work independently on their reading tasks. This year some groups will be a mixture of students from Mrs. Hudacsko’s class and mine, and other groups will be just made up of my students. These groups are fluid and change based on the needs of the individual students. Groups will work with myself and a variety of other teachers including Mrs. Hudacsko, Miss Lell, Ms. Melnick/Mrs. Pawlitzke, and Mrs. Jensen. This “all hands on deck” model ensures that all groups get extra attention from teachers.
Volunteers - Once we get the first few weeks of rotations down I will be adding parents to the mix. I will be using parents Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 9:40. I will be sending out a volunteer questionnaire late next week.
Homework - Thanks for all of your hard work at home on homework. Please be sure to try and get your child’s reading written down every night. Their first reading goal of 240 minutes is coming due on Monday. Students who successfully meet their goal will get to spin the wheel for a class prize.
Math - We finished our first module of math this week. They did a great job on their first “show what you know” or assessment on Tuesday. We are now working on a unit on addition and subtraction. A newsletter explaining some of the terminology went home on Thursday. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions.
Seesaw - I hope you’re enjoying the pictures and work I’ve been posting on Seesaw this past week. I like the app because it is a quick way to keep you connected to the work your child is doing in class. I haven’t figured out if there is a quick way to caption the photos as I add them. For now, please be sure to ask your children about the activities they are doing in the photos. My daughters’ wonderful preschool had a daily photo blog similar to what Seesaw does for you. The photos were a great way to spark conversation at dinner. I hope you’re having some great conversations too.

This week in the second grade we started to dig into some serious learning. In reading we wrapped up our work around what it means to be a 2nd grade reader; reading just right book, setting goals, reading in bigger phrases.
In math we have been working with place value into the hundreds place.
MAP Testing We will be taking the MAP test Tuesday and Thursday. I need your help in getting your child to bed early, fed a healthy protein packed breakfast, and to school on time. I will take care of the pep talks and stress relief. I will have the results of this preliminary test mid-October and will be happy to share them with you if you request it. I don’t print out the results in the fall.
There are lots of upcoming events Please be sure to click on the Important Dates page and add them to your calendars.

Welcome to the second grade. I have had a terrific time with the children this week. We’ve been busy getting to know each other, learning new routines, and creating classroom community. I am truly enjoying your children. They are a terrific group!
We will be holding our Parent Night Thursday, September 22nd at 5:30. I will try to answer many of your questions about 2nd grade at that time, including those about homework and volunteers.
Reading homework will start coming home on Monday. The expectation is that students will read 20 minutes a night. Please help your child record their reading on the log that will be in their homework folders. Keep the log in their folder and send it back to school each day. I’ll talk more about what that reading can look like at Parent Night. For now please enjoy books together and don’t make them read aloud for the whole 20 minutes!
This will be the only paper Friday News that I will send home this year. From now on, I will be posting them on our school website and sending you a weekly email with the link. Please help me facilitate getting this information to you by filling out the bottom of this page and returning it with your student.
